Bulgaria is situated on the eastern side of the Balkan peninsula with frontiers to Romania, Serbia, Macedonia, Greece, Turkey and the Black sea. The Black Sea coast has become a popular holiday destination. The central Balkan Mountains separates the Danube plains in the north from the Rodopi massif and the lowlands in the south.

The first stamps were issued in 1879 and represent an upright lion with a crown on the head, which symbolizes power and force. About 40 special stamps and a number of definitive stamps are issued each year and the issues are characterized by several large and very nice stamps.
