Classic collection area with a modern touch
France is one of the classic collection areas. The first French stamp, the black 20 centimes CERES-stamp, was issued in 1849 and until France changed currency from Franc to Euro in 2002, French stamps have had the special feature that all stamps and airmail stamps through the times still were valid for postage. However, this was changed as the Euro is the only valid currency now – and thereby also on the stamps.
France is one of the countries in the entire world that makes a great effort to uphold the engraving tradition, but also photogravure and offset printing is used. In terms of themes, France is very classic and the themes are often  inspired by the long history and rich culture of the country. Prominent people and glimpses from the many interesting regions in France are often used as themes on the stamps. This mixture of printing methods together with the different themes on the stamps, makes France a very attractive collection area.
