The cradle of culture
Greece is rightly considered to be the cradle of western culture. Already in the 8th century B.C. the Greek writing was developed based on the common language, which was spoken by the different tribes in the area. Despite this cultural advantage, the destiny of the country was decided by foreign powers for many hundreds of years. The Turks alone kept the country occupied for almost 400 years from 1456 to 1821 and the Greeks finally obtained their independency in 1829.Today Greece is a parliamentary republic after the abolishment of the monarchy in 1973 with the removal of the King Constantine and Queen Anne-Marie, who had to go into exile.
Stamps from Greece
The first stamps were issued in 1861 and today almost 10 sets of stamps are issued per year. These themes are often inspired by the Greek nature, culture and history.
