Stamps from Latvia

Population: 2.217.969 - Capital: Riga - Currency: Lats - 1st issue: 1918/91

Latvia is the intermediate of the Baltic states as far as both situation and size is concerned. And like the two other Baltic states, the country has a changing history behind. It has been under many different foreign powers. Latvia obtained the final freedom and independence in 1991 after the collapse of the Soviet Union and thereby Latvia also regained the right to issue their own stamps again after a number of years under foreign government. Latvia is one of the newer interesting collection areas with a moderate issuing policy. The themes of the stamps focus on the history and heritage of the country, but also on events in Europe and the rest of the world.
