Tulips, channels, mills and famous painters
Netherland is known for tulips, channels and the large number of mills. But furthermore the country has an important cultural history and has produced many world famous painters, such as Rembrandt and Van Gogh. The country, which is a Kingdom, is situated by the North Sea coast and consists of a very flat area, where large parts are lower than the surface of the sea. This is due to the fact that a large part of the country consists of diked-in land, which is protected by dunes and dykes. The low areas are cut by countless channels, which are being used in the same way as roads. Mail has therefor also been transported on the waterway by coaches pulled by horses up on the land. The riders had a trumpet made of cow horn to warn barge porters and people on the swing bridges. On land special postal coaches were used, where the horses only were   tethered with one simple rope. When they had to brake, they did it by pushing their feet into the neck of the horses. This transportation form, more than a 100 years old, has however been replaced by modern transport means a long time ago.
